Deutsch term

Zangeneinfluss

Deutsch > Englisch Wirtschaft/Finanzwesen Management/Verwaltung
Apparently this seems to be a combination of top-down and bottom-up marketing styles. I think I get the gist of it - you get your claws into somebody and use your influence from there, but I don't know if we have a common EN expression.

It just comes in a list of tasks for client managers without any context, but it is used again just afterwards with a bit more context: "Gefahr, dass der Kunde den Zangeneinfluss als Manipulation empfinden könnte".

Discussion

Dr Andrew Read Jul 19, 2014:
Thank you for the useful reference, Edith. This describes exactly what I was thinking, though I think the bullet points on the page of the book wher it appears have been placed incorrectly (or confusingly), i.e. The Zangeneinfluss seems to describe the combination of top-down & bottom-up pressure.

Dennis Boyd Jul 18, 2014:
This term reminds me of Glengarry Glen Ross, honestly!

This is all there is: "„Zangeneinfluss“ (Top-down und Bottom up)"

pincer movement

I've got it - I think!

Although there are no google hits at all fit the specific term, a linguee DE / EN Search on Zangen show that these are often translated as pincers. And I checked this by inputting 'pincer movement. As the link below shows this is often translated as something involving Zangen in German, eg Zangenbewegung or Zangenangriff.

And it fits perfectly with the top down / bottom up aspect, I.e a way of capturing the client by appraising him fro above and below (eg. shmoosing by a manager from above, and belong hassled with telesales calls from below) in a kind of pincer movement!

Three typos sorry:
*for the specific term
And
*by approaching him
And
*and being hassled

It's been a long, hot week!

neutral Cilian O'Tuama : Go easy on the confidence level there, Andrew. Consumers feel a pincer movement?...

Hi Cilian. Tbh, I'm still pretty sure. The context seems to be B2B sales, not B2C, and the scenario I describe fits there, supported by the ref posted by Edith.

Guided selling/sales

in die Zange nehmen in the sense of ausfragen

Concern of avoiding being seen to manipulate makes me think of lead generation and guided sales, wherein the account manager attempts to steer/coerce the customer towards a sale without him being aware of it.

top-down and bottom-up pressure

That would fit marketing and is suggested by the source itself.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Dr Andrew Read : I agree that's what's going on, Alexander, but think the term I propose describes it a little more neatly & corresponds more closely to the ST term.
