German term

eine prägnante Erklärung

German to English Bus/Financial Management
Context:

"eine prägnante, dem Wert der Beschaffung entsprechende Erklärung (ist) einzutragen."

I found this translated (by a German) as "the requester has to enter a concise explanation corresponding to the value of the procurement", but I'm really not sure about that. Surely it would either be "a brief note indicating the value" or something like that, wouldn't it?

Discussion

David Williams (asker) Feb 15, 2010:
Indeed, Craig the latter was what I had a problem with, too.
Craig Meulen Feb 13, 2010:
DWDS definition: "das Wesentliche kurz und treffend ausdrückend".
Craig Meulen Feb 13, 2010:
Which term? Is the problem "prägnant" or "dem Wert der Beschaffung entsprechend"? The latter would be more of a problem for me! What's the context - What document is it that we are making an Eintrag in? What sort of Beschaffung are we talking about?
Gunter Prediger Feb 13, 2010:
concise vs. succinct Since the German term "prägnant" has the meaning of to imprint something on your mind, I think succinct is more precise than concise in the context given. Perhaps a linguist can shed some loght on it
Dr Lofthouse Feb 12, 2010:
I prefer 'concise' too (UK native)
DC Josephs Feb 12, 2010:
I like concise Boiled down to its essentials, the German instruction is demanding: "Tell us why we need to buy this. And KISS." So "a concise explanation *justifying* the value of the purchase/procurement" is probably a neutral way of expressing this.

In your context "Erklärung" is 'declaration' and "entsprechen" is used in the sense of 'to be adequate', methinks.

You may also like to consider 'clear' as a possible rendering of "prägnant".
FWIW, the phrase "clear and adequate" googles well.
