German term

abrechnen

German to English Law/Patents Law: Patents, Trademarks, Copyright Licences
"Die Lizenzgebühren sind vom Lizenznehmer bis zum TT.MM eines jeden Jahres für das Vorjahr abzurechnen und bis zum Ablauf dieses Monats auf das Konto des Lizenzgebers zu zahlen."

Our good old friend "abrechnen". I can't work out whether the above is doppelt-gemoppelt. If "abrechnen" can mean "settle", where does it differ from "zahlen" in the above context? Or does "abrechnen" mean something different here?

Thanks Brigitte. I think you've answered my question. I've been going through another section of this document that talks about external auditors examining the Lizenznehmer's accounts and checking that the computation of the Lizenzgebühren is in order.
BrigitteHilgner Feb 6, 2009:
I would say "abrechnen" refers to the 'accounting part' of the process - first they need to do the summing up, then they can pay.
