German term (edited):
Auffassungsaufgabe

Comprehension
The actual German term should be "Auffassungsgabe" und nicht -aufgabe. See http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auffassungsgabe
This is a standard term for student (or employee) assessment.
I have found the following in EUR-Lex: http://eur-lex.europa.eu/Notice.do?mode=dbl&lang=de&lng1=de,...
DE: Der Probezeitbericht, der am 10. Mai 1995 über sie verfasst wurde, enthält folgende Beurteilungen:
– „Fähigkeit, ihre Aufgaben wahrzunehmen“: „gut“, für die Rubrik „Auffassungsgabe, Anpassungs- und Urteilsfähigkeit“ wird jedoch die Note „unzureichend“ vergeben, die mit fehlender Genauigkeit, Detailsorgfalt und Aufmerksamkeit begründet wird;
EN: The probationary report drawn up on Ms Landgren on 10 May 1995 included the following assessments:
– in regard to ‘Ability to perform her duties’: ‘good’, although under the heading ‘Comprehension, adaptability, judgment’, the assessment was ‘insufficient’, justified by a lack of precision, attention to detail and care;

German term (edited):
Auffassungsaufgabe
quick on the uptake
In the phrase 'schnelle Auffassungsgabe' it usually refers to the ability to absorb new information quickly or quickly get the measure of new situations and demands.

In that case, why not put something very complimentary about the person's 'grasp' of his or her area.

Note from asker:
thanks. that's what I've seen mostly too, however, in my context they used ausgeprägte instead of schnelle |

: Dear Debora, I think "quick on the uptake" is the description of somebody with "Auffassungsgabe". Here the asker asks for one word serving as an attribute on a list. I believe, "comprehension" renders the meaning better (see my answer)

I take your point! But 'listed' doesn't necessarily imply a list of words, which would be unusual in a testimonial.

I would recomment to consult online dict. cc. it offers at least a dozen of viable options , a.o.: perception, comprehension, quick wittedness and such like.

Steffen Walter
: I'd consider "tremendous" a bit too strong (a bit too much on the positive side) to render "ausgeprägt". Perhaps "very good"?

Discussion
I do agree with the correct spelling "Auffassungsgabe". Auffassungsaufgabe would be something like a comprehension test ;)
Patrick - ignoring the well known pitfalls of google, you can still use it to check the relative frequency of two alternate spellings: Auffassungsaufgabe 784 hits, Auffassungsgabe 656,000 hits
