I am tempted to translate this as base level, but I'm not sure what the correct geological term is. Here is a sample sentence:

"In beiden Gebieten griefen die kretazischen Schichten mit einer vorwiegend roten Basiseinheit diskordant über ein eingerumpftes und gefaltetes jungpaläozoisches Grundgebirge."
