cervicotomie blanche

French to English Medical Medical (general)
This is from a patient with medullary thyroid cancer.

Something to do with the cervical lymph nodes? Lots of refs online regarding the cervix, yet I'm pretty sure the patient is male!

tentative de reprise de curage mediastinal et pretracheal pour ganglion pretracheal avec cervicotomie blanche

Thanks!

Michael Barnett Jan 31, 2021:
@Phil -otomy means incision, -ectomy means removal.
philgoddard Jan 26, 2021:
I never knew that!
Suzie Withers Jan 26, 2021:
@Phil -cotomy can just mean incision, I believe, not necessarily removal.

My sister had heart surgery and the type of incision was called "thoracotomy" - nothing was removed!

@ Asker A bit of research and you should have found:
The pretracheal lymph nodes lie anterior to the trachea. They follow the anterior jugular veins either side of the midline. They drain into the deep cervical lymph nodes on the right and the thoracic duct on the left.
philgoddard Jan 25, 2021:
I'm not a medic, but... this raises the question of what "cervicotomy" means. I found a few references defining it as an incision in the neck, but I'm not sure if they're reliable. "-otomy" usually means removal.
Bashiqa Jan 25, 2021:
@ Asker Some basic knowledge does not go amiss.
In anatomy, cervical is an adjective that has two meanings: of or pertaining to any neck. of or pertaining to the female cervix: i.e., the neck of the uterus.

neutral philgoddard : "Exploratory" is a possibility, but "white" is a mistranslation. It gets almost no hits, and they're all from other languages. Also, your second reference is irrelevant. //The NHS one is Italian, and the NIH one is French. They're translations.

neutral philgoddard : None of your references works for me, though I wonder if "blind" in the second one may be a clue, with "blanche" meaning "blank" rather than "white".

No, it has nothing to do with "blank".
agree Anne Schulz : The reference you quoted in the Discussion clearly confirms this meaning.

The translation to the letter from the portugese would be "white cervictomy" once qu'en portugais c'est "cervicotomia branca":

translation: The white cervectomy (that is, one opens but doesn't find nothing) index.
It means that unsuccessful cervicotomy is a good translation.
