French term

fermeture sur un redon

French to English Medical Medical (general) surgery
This is in a surgical report which I am translating - I would just like some confirmation of the meaning of this phase in the following context:

"Suture du muscle tibial antérieur par une série de points en croix;

La mobilisation du genou n'entraîne pas de traction sur la suture nerveuse.

Fermeture sur un redon, agrafes sur la peau - réalisation d'une botte plâtrée postérieure..."

Many thanks in advance.

Discussion

liz askew Mar 18, 2010:
Fair enough. Though this query is now in the distant past, but will no doubt come up again in the future:)
Drmanu49 Mar 18, 2010:
I owe an apology to Liz and Sue for my case. I underwent shoulder surgery and had redon static drainage into apocket; I then underwent hand surgery and initially had a suction drain which was removed a couple of hours later. I went and asked the surgeon who said it was that but the term was shortened on the basic operative report and mentioned only on the complete patient file.
liz askew Mar 11, 2010:
Jolly dee! [will do my all own research in future:)]
SJLD Mar 11, 2010:
Yes, AKA perforated drain.
liz askew Mar 11, 2010:
So, in actual fact it could be a Redon drainage tube.

SJLD Mar 10, 2010:
May be true for your surgeon, but there are many examples of "drain de Redon" in French where it is quite obviously referring to a suction drain, and not qualified by "aspiratif". If you use Redon in English, most people will think "suction".
Drmanu49 Mar 10, 2010:
For the French surgeon it is called a redon and that is what she wrote down in the OR. If it had been a suction drain she would have written redon aspiratif.
SJLD Mar 10, 2010:
Drmanu49 Mar 10, 2010:
suction is made with vacuum. But I just had a redon removed after hand surgery and it certainly was not a suction drain. Written on the OR: fermeture avec redon. In that case, it is just pressure from wound which causes fluid to leak out, no suction at all.
liz askew Mar 10, 2010:
Hello SJLD
Thank you for the additional information. Always useful, especially when other linguists come to search for this term.
SJLD Mar 10, 2010:
The French use "redon" to designate the suction drain as they use "kleenex" to designate a paper tissue. If it is not capitalised there is no need to use Redon. Or you can use "Redon-type drain". As a rule I avoid brand names if there is no particular call to use them.

Redon, drain de, ou redon
Tube souple percé de trous à l'extrémité disposée dans une plaie opératoire, et dont l'autre extrémité est reliée à un bocal où un vide continu est créé pour aspirer les sérosités et le sang de la plaie.
SJLD Mar 10, 2010:
Redon drains are suction drains http://www.ledamed.org/IMG/html/doc-10533.html

Thank you Lionel.
neutral liz askew : You don't close a wound "with" a drain, but "over" one. A basic mistake.

with is coherent with insertion as mentioned Liz. It is not just the skin.

Peer comment(s):

agree SJLD : yep, a "redon" is a suction drain (not necessarily of the brand Redon) - wound closure (not just skin) - with insertion of suction drain/It's the skin and subcutaneous tissue being closed - not the muscle in fact.

Thank you! This came up before and fortunately I remember it!
neutral Lionel_M (X) : Why skin closure ? It's a muscle//No but as pointed out by Sue, all the wound should be closed, in particular here the muscle. Not only the skin if you don't want oedema; just a "basic mistake" :)
