I don't think there's any clearcut answer to this. You can query an artificial intelligence system (how big is the universe?) or request that it do something (write me a shopping list).

The translator may have been right to use both terms.

From IBM website: there is in fact a computer command "QUERY REQUEST" which tells me that query is correct for my original question and not request as I thought.

Just to complicate matters i`ve come across the following: la directive de désambiguïsation comprend une requête de questionnement de l’utilisateur, le module d’interprétation multimodale étant alors configuré pour interroger l’utilisateur en fonction de la requête de questionnement par l’intermédiaire d’une interface homme-machine ;
translated as "a query request from the user"
