left neighbor / left horizontal neighbor / left diagonal neighbor Explanation: Adjacency matrices are used in graph theory and computer science, and terms are specific but very logical too. Thankfully, a lot of literature is available. I've found an excellent little diagram that perfectly illustrates neighbors in matrices: In the case where we take cell (i, j) as the reference, the left horizontal neighbor cell is (i, j-1), and the left diagonal squares are (i-1, j-1) and (i+1, j-1). The linguist in me prefers the sound of "left-neighbouring," but terminological references are really abundant and very clear. I think it's important to be as precise with the English terms as the terms in the source document are, especially in scientific domains such as mathematics and computer science, which demand precision. https://www.baeldung.com/cs/finding-neighbors-of-matrix-element https://cs.stackexchange.com/questions/109668/matrix-covering-by-squares |
