je vous mets en dessous

French to English Science Environment & Ecology Sentences for AI learning

Conor McAuley Jul 30, 2022:
Pure baratin, go and mistreat your cats then.
Daryo Jul 29, 2022:
I could point out to a number of clues / inconsistencies that say otherwise, but ... getting bored with this puzzle + j'ai d'autres chats à fouetter.
Conor McAuley Jul 29, 2022:
You have no imagination, Daryo.

The text is about recycling, it's in the style of what the French State does when it tries to explain things to us as if we were 10-year-olds.
It's not particularly well written, but there you go.

The clue, as you yourself would say, is "Ecology" – recycling.

Yet this kind of thing is needed – my neighbours follow recycling rules as if they were 10-year-olds!
Daryo Jul 29, 2022:
This in fact looks to me more like ... the linguistic version of the Rorschach test.

As part of the longer dialogue from which it was extracted - OR as part of a movie with the added "visual context" - it surely makes perfect sense.

Limited as it is, it contains about as much "meaningful information" as an ink blot.

52 words and still a total mystery - that might be some kind of record?
Conor McAuley Jul 28, 2022:
Well, if you think "ils le traitent" refers to a corpse that's been dumped in a landfill, ignore "ce petit filet" or take it to be the weapon used.
Then "je vous mets en dessous" sounds like verbal abuse, "vous allez me dire oui" is coercion, and well, it's all a bit scary.

AI comes in very handy on a daily basis, but good luck to it on this kind of thing.
Emmanuella Jul 28, 2022:
Aucune idée !!
Conor McAuley Jul 28, 2022:
I'm 99% sure it's about recycling.

But if you read it again, ignoring a few bits, possibly, from a serial killer/abusive partner point of view, it's quite disturbing!

(Some of Verity's previous posts were about relationships, if I remember correctly.)
AllegroTrans Jul 28, 2022:
Asker With the greatest of respect, as well as being practically without meaningful context, this is far too ambiguous for any "entity" (even a human) to learn anything other than "maybe it is, maybe it isn't"
Daryo Jul 28, 2022:
"Sentences for AI learning"? Doubly pointless exercise:

1 - a case of turkeys voting for Christmas / translators cutting off the branch they're sitting on (from the wrong side)

2 - on its own it's too ambiguous (= meaningless), so no "Intelligence" (Artificial or of any other imaginable variety) will "learn" anything useful from what will inevitably be only pure guesswork.

If the creators of AI imagine they will improve AI this way, the reports of human translation being dead have been grossly exaggerated / premature.
ormiston Jul 28, 2022:
Is this a transcript of a conversation? He could even be talking about an email ("I'll copy you in on this.... don't add a title under 'objet' etc). Amazing where one's imagination can go without a proper context - or helpful punctuation..!
Lara Barnett Jul 28, 2022:
@ Verity I agree with Conor, but it could appear less strange if you could possibly post some more context connected to this? Either a description or surrounding text would help.
Conor McAuley Jul 28, 2022:
Any more context? This is a strange one.

French term (edited): mettre qqn. en dessous; je vous mets en dessous

take s.o. down; now to take your sort down a peg

> rather than to stick somone in underwear and possibly to contrast with : 'ça c'était j'ai vraiment trouvé ça *top*...'

je #vous# mets en dessous, maintenant vous allez me dire oui: I'm going to take you #your sort# down/ a peg (put you on the spot : under pressure). Now you are going to agree with me...

The expression of 'Être dans le ou au trente-sixième dessous' in the first web ref. seems only tangentially related to a 'downer'.

Now to wait for native French readers to add their choice (post-Euro match) comments....

Otherwise, this A1 learning seems to cover a broad range of categories, including banking - here, Science - Environment & Ecology.
Example sentence:

They are not responsible for the present crisis, so why should the aspirations and needs of their people be relegated to the back seat?

disagree Tony M : Doesn't make sense: in your examples, there is always a direct object; whereas in the sentence given, the direct object nonsensically appears to be 'vous', whence the puzzlement.

Think, please, fundamental colloquial and elliptical. The examples servent only to bring up the idea.
disagree AllegroTrans : Totally agree with Tony

But, please, read my answer to Tony and think a lot. It doesn't interest what is written but what is in mind.
disagree Conor McAuley : Whaaaaaaat?

disagree Daryo : this short dialogue can be interpreted in many ways, but I can't see any variant in which your suggestion could make any sense.
