French term

limande

French to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng Assembly subcontract
This is from specifications for the subcontract to assemble a slim, pocket-sized device.

"La carte traitement et l'afficheur seront thermocollés entre eux avec la limande. Les délais de péremption ainsi que les conditions de stockage des limandes devront être impérativement respectés."

I know « limande » has been covered before, and by reflex I would normally translate this as "flat cable"/"ribbon cable", or possibly "jumper", but I wouldn't normally expect a ribbon cable to function as a bonding agent/layer, nor have an expiry date.
Proposed translations (English)
3 ribbon cable

thanks both I've largely given up opening things smaller than a paperback, I don't have the tools and don't see it being pointfull to invest in them (except I did once replace the glass on a mobile phone).

As Chris says the ribbon cable of your pocket-sized device is not likely to be the size of what I, at least, am used to seeing in desktop PCs! I took my daughter's MP3 apart when it died some years ago, and as Chris says, the flat "cables" are flimsy little things. Possibly beyond a certain date, if not kept in ideal conditions, the conducting tracery is eaten away by oxidation, etc.

Here are some examples but they don't show the thickness, which is generally about the same as a sheet of paper: http://www.freeyourmobile.biz/acatalog/mobile_phone_flexible...

thanks Chris very useful to have an insight into the physical nature of the things (sadly no images or other supporting material with this job).

It's definitely neither a soul nor a place, but I think the idea is that the flexible cable (and they are very flexible, and very flat, containing no wires but printed copper strips about 10 microns thick) is bonded (hot melt adhesive) between the processor board and the display. I have tried taking these things apart, and they require the skills of a watchmakerto reassemble. Expiry might be related to the cleanliness of the contacts.

Note from asker:
as I explained, I am aware of this, but the specific details of my context make me suspicious that it may not exactly the same thing
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : I think there is actually a special term for this particular kind of ultra-thin, ultra-flexible one
