Passerelles DEP-AEC

French to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy List and description of Cégep courses in Québec
This course is called "Procédés de traitement de minerai". There is a lengthy description of the course and the jobs it qualifies students for.

This sentence appears at the end of the description: "Ce programme permet des passerelles DEP-AEC."

DEC = diplôme d'études collégiales (diploma of college studies)
AEC = attestation d'études collégiales (attestation of college studies)

It's "passerelle" I'm not sure of. One translation is "gateway" but I don't know whether that's appropriate here.

Discussion

Bourth Sep 16, 2023:
DEP or DEC? One being professionnel, the other collégiale. If the former (vocational), I think 'gateway' works better than if not.
philgoddard Sep 16, 2023:
Thanks, Emmanuella Gateway would work too.

I'm not saying it's good, but it's what the Quebec authorities might expect to see.

Passerelle

Bridges
Bridges facilitate a student's transition from, for example, one program of study to another for which the student would normally be required to obtain a diploma. Bridges are used to ensure continuity from one program of study to the next.

This article focuses on the bridges that have helped professional training graduates continue their technical training. These government measures have sought to decompartmentalize professional training and increase the number of technical training students. This article will address the nature of these bridges and the progress of the students involved, along with the conditions that have helped or hindered success and perseverance regarding their technical training. For this, Tinto’s model will be used.

'Bridge' is used outside Quebec too. From the above: "A bridge program is a partnership in Canada between two post-secondary institutions that allows students to transfer college credits from one institution to another. A bridge program student typically holds a two-year college degree and wants to obtain a four-year or graduate degree. [ ... ] The College University Consortium Council (CUCC) was created in 1996 by the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities as an advisory body to help devise direct transfer routes between post-secondary institutions for all Ontario students.[2][3] Membership is voluntary for all post-secondary institutions. While the CUCC aims to help institutions create bridge programs, it still maintains that colleges and universities have full autonomy on the specifics of the agreements created. [ ... ] With the shift of the job market toward hiring employees with a bachelor or graduate degrees for occupations that previously accepted college diplomas, it is becoming less likely for students to enroll in a diploma program if they cannot be guaranteed entry into a bachelor's program upon completion of their courses. Creating mutually beneficial bridge programs between colleges and universities may prove to be difficult, as both systems were created and have developed as completely separate entities with distinct policies and curriculum to meet the needs of their student bodies."
