"Збитковими лідерами" називають товари, які продаються і широко рекламуються за явно заниженими цінами. Бажання придбати дешевий товар збільшує потік покупців у торговельному підприємстві, внаслідок цього збільшується загальний продаж усіх товарів. Тобто сам по собі "збитковий лідер" може продаватися без прибутку або навіть зі збитками, але загальне збільшення товарообороту інших товарів робить цей прийом вигідним.
