I have often used the term "psicólogos" to include both psychologists and therapists; however, in this context, there seems to be a clear distinction with the list of providers. Since "LCSW" = trabajadores clínicos titulados, I could use that to distinguish the second set of providers from the first; however, I'm uncertain if the credentials "PC" would fall into the same category as LCSW. (I have learned that PC stands for Professional Counselor; someone who is not licensed). Therefore, I would propose creating one simple list of "Nuestros psicólogos". Input from others with more experience in this field would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Feb 27, 2014 13:51: Beatriz Ramírez de Haro changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (3): David Hollywood, abe(L)solano, Beatriz Ramírez de Haro

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists all work within the mental health field. They all serve a different function and meet the needs of the community in their own ways. Each position also has its own set of specific areas that the professionals may work in. Though some of these professionals may work in the same area, they are each serving that area in a completely different capacity.
Therapists: The role of the therapist is most often a "hands on" role that requires the therapist to work closely with the client. The educational requirements vary from state to state but generally need to reach a minimum of a bachelor level of education. Some states require a master's degree as well as an internship. The therapist may work closely with a psychiatrist, psychologist or both to determine the best treatment plan to serve the client. In cases of inpatient treatment, the therapist will also work with the nursing staff which may include mental health technicians, nurses and nurse's aides.

The therapist may work in a group structure or a one on one situation, depending on the facility they work for and the needs of the clients. The job of the therapist is to document and observe the behavior and oral delivery of the client while trying to set goals within a feasible treatment plan.

Psychologists: The role of the psychologist is often one of observation, documentation and interpretation. Their focus is solely on the mental and behavioral aspect of the client with no access to medication. Though the client may be medicated, it will not be by the psychologist as it is not within their capacity to assign medications to clients. Psychologists are not required to attend medical school due to the lack of use of medication in their chosen field. A psychologist must however hold a master's degree or higher. Clinical psychologists must hold a doctoral degree as well as having served in a one year internship.

Psychologists often find themselves in areas of research and testing. Part of a complete mental health assessment may include personality and I.Q. tests which are administered and interpreted by the psychologist. The psychologist is often a member of a treatment team that works together to come up with a treatment plan to assist the client, each serving in their own capacity.

Psychiatrists: A psychiatrist has more educational requirements to meet than anyone else in the mental health field. In addition to meeting all the requirements of the psychologist, the psychiatrist must also graduate from medical school as they will have the ability to prescribe medications to their clients.

If the psychiatrist functions as a member of a treatment team, which is often the case, their function will be to assess the information given to them by the team and the client to determine which, if any medication is needed. If a psychiatrist is working with a treatment team, they are likely to see the patient on an outpatient basis on a schedule of about once a month. The basic function of a psychiatrist is to ensure that the physical and mental aspects of the client are working together in such a way as to lead the client to lead a productive role in society.
