Prostate cancer, since it can be such a slow-growing cancer, may co-exist with other other age-related diseases. In fact, many people with prostate cancer die of other causes. However, it makes sense that their prognosis would depend on how many diseases they are fighting at the same time; this puts a strain on their immune system.

The \"competing diseases\" are not necessarily \"caused\" by prostate cancer--they could have existed before, or they may have taken hold due to a weakened immune system...in any case it would be reading too much into the text to jump to the conclusion that they are \"derived\" or \"related\" to this disease.
