In American English gig is simply slang for a job (I think it would be a good idea to keep the same register) I do not think that the duration of the job here is an issue...they are probably talking about Pomona College, you can look up the author's name.

No sé si tendrá que ver, pero gig puede interpretarse como un trabajo temporal.
