I'm thinking of using "rutinne zastrasovanie a "presviedcanie"" I would be glad if somebody would suggest anything more appropriate. Thank you.

Within the given context of Burroughs' Junky I think it has surely something to do with exaction (vymáhanie, vytriasanie peňazí,..). Coctails would give no meaning there.

: Nope, to shake somebody in this context means that you "shake" him to get money out of him

: As for the "marihuana", the author uses expression "weed", and "shakes" are in the corresponding sentence, with a description of a muscle man, surely pointing to extortion practices
