povodeň, záplava

Or even "potopa" but that's a bit too biblical, I think.
Both "povodeň" and "záplava" work fine in Environment & Ecology.

Okay, I have just found an interesting explanation: "povodeň" is the actual natural disaster, and "záplava" is the consequence (water covers everything). Hope that helps.

povodeň

Povodeň is the most common word nowadays to refer to this type of disaster.

There is another word "potopa" - but it is used in different contexts (e.g. in the Bible).
