An "identity fraction" for aligned segments of a test sequence and a reference sequence is the number of identical components which are shared by the two aligned sequences divided by the total number of components in the reference sequence segment, that is, the entire reference sequence or a smaller defined part of the reference sequence.

Ако је референтни низ особен за неки познати вирус и поређење са неким новим вирусом покаже н. пр. 95% подударности, онда је "сродност (/блискост) идентита" новог вируса 95% у односу на тај већ познати вирус. (0% = ни налик, 100% = потпуно исти "идентитет")
