The UE (user equipment) can rapidly request the retransmission of missing data and combine information from the original transmission with that of the later transmission before attempting to decode the message. This approach, called soft-combining, increases capacity and provides robustness. A negative acknowledge (NACK) reply is sent when data is missing at the receiving end.
