Commissioning guidance for day service sissued by the Department of Health (2006b)is intended to encourage a shift away from buildings-based services towards greater provision of community bridge-building services that support individuals to engage with mainstream organisations and work with those organisations to widen opportunities for people with mental health needs.

Community Bridge Building Services
This service offers the individual a person-centred time-limited programme to meet the individual’s recovery plan and enhance their quality of life. The service enables individuals who have been socially excluded to reclaim their rightful place back in the mainstream of society. It is staffed by Bridge Builders who have a background and specialist expertise in a number of life domains that service users can choose to access. These are: employment, volunteering, education and training, healthy living, sports and leisure, arts, cultural communities, faith and spirituality, homes, families and neighbourhoods.

Community Bridge Building
The Community Bridge Building Service (CBBS) will be the hub of modern service provision and will be aimed at adults of working age in Gateshead with mental health needs, with a view to involving them in a broad range of mainstream activities and meaningful opportunities. Thereby allowing them to lead ordinary, active, lives alongside other citizens in the community.

A “community bridge building” service, providing a bridge for service users from statutory mental health services to what has been described as “the mainstream” or community services and opportunities.
People who use this service will be helped to identify their social inclusion needs and be matched to services and opportunities in the community that meet their recovery aspirations.

An effective model which has been evaluated is that of a Community Bridge Building. The model promotes the inclusion of people with mental health need and recognises the contribution that everyone can make in their own communities by introducing people to mainstream activities which are not restricted for the sole use of mental health service users; which is typical of more traditional mental health services. Instead the Community Bridge Building Service assists people with mental health needs and build relationships with people who have no other contact with mental health services.

Navigator/Bridge Builder Service – this service will concentrateon opening up new opportunities for people in education,employment, volunteering and leisure.
