Ευρυάλη η θηριώδης ("κινέζικα φουντούκια")
Η Euryale ferox επισήμως (φυτόν της Σινικής) μάς δίνει αυτά τα φουντούκια που εδώ δεν τα μεταφράζουν (όπως φαίνεται εδώ: http://users.sch.gr/ioakenanid/cuisine.htm) αλλά τα πουλάνε σε μαγαζιά με κινέζικα.
Επισήμως στη Φυτολογία του Γεννάδιου: Ευρυάλη η θηριώδης, αλλά δεν φύονται στη Γλυφάδα. Μόνο στη Άπω Ανατολή, οπότε προτείνω “κινέζικα φουντούκια”, αλλά αν το βάλεις, βάλε και το fox nuts σε παρένθεση.

Αλλά αφού τα λένε και Ferox seeds, συμφωνώ να τα πεις:
σπόρους / σπέρματα ευρυάλης (fox nuts)
Και να μην τα πεις φουντούκια (που είναι nuts με τα όλα τους).

In Greek, the word 'gorgon' means terrible. Why this name was applied remains obscurred. The seeds are spiny-covered, though, and found within a floating water-plant having an insipid pulp, but are supposed to have a cooling quality, as well as being nutritious. The fruit itself is round and soft and about the size of an orange, containing up to fifteen seeds the size of peas.

Σούπα με lotus nuts και fox nuts. Οι σπόροι του λωτού καθώς και τα fox nuts βρίσκονται εν αφθονία σε όλα τα κινέζικα μαγαζιά (λωτό εννοούμε το υδρόβιο φυτό και όχι το γνωστό μας δέντρο).

Seeing a packet labelled 'fox nuts', my curiosity was aroused and I bought it, intending to find out more about how it is used. All the shopkeeper could tell me was that it is used in soup.
The 'soup' referred to is actually a herbal brew which older generations of Chinese prepare for the family about once a week. The parents of today's young adults complain that no longer is this preventive measure taken as seriously as it used to be. If prepared at all, it is much less frequently. The purpose is to cleanse and tone the system, the Chinese school of medicine believing strongly that prevention is better than cure.
Medicinal uses: Chinese grocery stores sell various mixtures known as ching bo leung (meaning a formula which will clear the system, pamper and enrich). Among the ingredients of the herbal mix are fox nuts (chieh shek).
