Seeing these discourses also allows us to see the public image of sociology, if only the student version of that image. In an important sense, students are primary representatives of the discipline to the public. Kith and kin often call upon them to explain what sociology is or does. For better or for worse, sociologists lack a clear public image. To be sure, we have appeared in the occasional Monty Python sketch (see "Hell's Grannies"), sitcom (Rob Reiner's character, "Meathead" in "All in the Family" was a sociologist) or in the popular press. However, because of the paucity of popular representations of sociologists, students must step into the gap and educate the public - or at least that portion with which they come into contact - about the profession. By evaluating the stereotypes held by students, we may better understand what the culture at large expects of sociologists.
