Vintage smocking: Decorative needlework used to hold rows of gathers or pleats. The stitches catch alternate folds in a row in elaborate honeycomb designs. Fabric is pleated or gathered in rows, while each row of gather is connected to the next via threads alternating gathers so that triangle shapes are formed between two rows. A diamond is formed between three rows.
