English term or phrase: transactional motivations
"Without a critical perspective on hope, we would be stuck within a utilitarian ethic, where people are assumed to only do something because they will achieve a result. Such transactional motivations have been promoted as the norm by systems of power, including capitalism. But it doesn’t reflect the breadth of human motivation, to which a critical reading of the stories of hope can return us to."

This is from a social science monograph I'm translating. I would spontaneously translate "transactional motivations" by "motivations de nature transactionnelle" - but this adjective in French seems to be mostly used within the field of law and business (protocole transactionnel) to refer to an actual transaction - or in psychology (l'Analyse transactionnelle)... but rarely (almost never?) in philosophy/sociology, like in this context, to mean (rather pejoratively) that one is only doing sth to get sth in return, *as in* a transaction.
