Morocco used to be known as The Cherifian Empire (L'Empire Chérifien) until mid-XX century (and still widely used inside morocco today), the word الشريفً underlining the relationship of the ruling 'Alawite family to the Prophet Mohamed ((Sallallaahu 'alaihi Wa Sallam).
