There are three techniques for placing permanent PD catheters:
dissection (surgical technique),
peritoneoscopic techniques using a small peritoneoscope to inspect the abdomen and a surrounding spiral guide to advance the catheter into the abdomen and the cuff into the musculature (Y-Tec® technique), and
blind techniques using a needle, guidewire, dilator and Splitsheath (Seldinger techniques).

Si distinguono con terminologia impropria una tecnica chirurgica e una medica, meglio definite come tecniche rispettivamente a cielo aperto (cosiddetta "chirurgica") e a cielo coperto (cosiddetta "medica").
La tecnica a cielo coperto ("medica") si basa sull’uso della puntura percutanea (a cielo coperto) e sull’uso di particolari dispositivi per l’introduzione del catetere in peritoneo, in quella a cielo aperto ("chirurgica") l’accesso è ottenuto attraverso l’apertura di una breccia attraverso la parete addominale, sino all’apertura della cavità peritoneale.
