Spanish term

lote (animal experiments)

Spanish to English Science Science (general) animals, experiments
If you are talking about the sample of animals an experiment was carried out, and you say that there were 600 animals divided up into 10 lotes. Would this be batch? or Group?

thanks

Yes, groups. I'll look out some examples......

The animals were divided into 3 groups: I - healthy rats - normal group; II - rats with acute pancreatitis evoked by the injection of 5% sodium taurocholate; III - rats with a 0.9% solution of natrium chloride injected into the hepatopancreatic duct. Groups II and III were randomly divided into 6 subgroups. At 2, 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours after the induction of acute pancreatitis the rats were anesthetized and their kidneys used for biochemical investigations.

At this point, the animals were divided into four (4) groups of ten (10) animals each, and treated in the following manner:

Methods: Twenty four albino rats of Sprangue Dawley strain weighing 150-200 grams were used. Animals were divided into Four groups.

Peer comment(s):

agree John Speese : I would say groups, test groups, treatment groups, not batches, when talking about experimental design.

blocks

My husband is a Medical Veterinarian and a couple of years ago finished his Master's Degree in Non-Rumiant Animal Nutrition. I helped him out writing his thesis and experiment notes. He is not here right now to confirm my answer but I am quite sure it is blocks. The whole 600 animals would be the EU or Experimental Unit and it can be divided into Blocks.

I have the book "Experimental Design Analysis" by Marvin Lentner from Virginia Polythechnic Institute and State University
Explains definitions:
"Every treatment defines a population...
Each treatment is assigned to certain experimental material...
An experimental unit, denoted by EU, is the smallest entity a single treatment, provided that two such entities could receive different treatments.
A block is group of EU which provide homogeneous effects on a response variable. A complete block is a homogeneous group of EU upon which the treatments appear equally often (usually only once.)"

I would like to add that scientific researchers use different expression forms when writing a scientific article for a journal explaining an experiment as when they write an article for a magazine or newsletter. They are different. Maybe they use "groups" in the newsletter and "blocks" would be appropriate for the article itself.
Just an opinion.
I hope the following examples help out also.

Groups may be used in general description of experiment and blocks when explaining experiment analysis designs.
Peer comment(s):

neutral n/a (X) : Regarding your suggestion about how researchers use groups or blocks according to the type of audience, I assure you (as a researcher) that groups is the correct term here. Your ref to "Exp Design.." explains this....
