Se denomina archivo plano aquel que no tiene ningún formato especial. En el mundo de Windows y de Unix, generalmente son de tipo \"texto\" o .txt para que se puedan leer sea con Notepad o con cat (en el caso de Unix). Por ejemplo, los archivos creados por MS Word tienen una serie de códigos al inicio, por lo que su tamaño mínimo es de 11 Kbytes. En cambio el archivo de tipo .txt o ASCII no tiene códigos ni formatos (como fuente de letras).
