Facteur d'intégration territoriale

French to English Social Sciences Government / Politics History of political ideas
Hello! I was asked to translate parts of an academic essay from French to English for a US peer-reviewed (i.e., scholarly) journal. As far as I'm being concerned, the author's style is clear and straightforward, the text very well-written and easy to understand. But when it comes to translation, I'm sometimes at a loss for what is the accurate term. How would you translate "facteur d'intégration territoriale" in the fowolling context? I do appreciate your taking the time, thank you very much in advance!

the centre of a unified territory

I think the previous suggestions are too literal. In particular, 'factor' doesn't work.
Peer comment(s):

agree Charlie Bavington : Was going to suggest territorial lynchpin but this is the same idea without the word-for-wordiness of the other suggestions. The territory being Christendom ofc, and yes, Rome seeing itself as the centre (until Avignon, etc.)

key-factor in territorialisation

si Rome peut se présenter comme capitale de la Christianitas, donc comme son facteur (déterminant) d’intégration territoriale > if Rome is able to hold itself out as the Capital of Christianity, hence as its (key-)factor in territorialisation (vs. harbinger as a 'postman').

Otherwise, you (BrE) have been rather than (AmE) were asked and fas as you are concocenrd - not being concerned as a present continuous.
Example sentence:

Commercial activities are the main factor of territorialisation by local businessmen.

neutral Andrew Bramhall : Totally bizarre and nonsensical justification below the answer.

"the stimulus for integration of the territories it occupies"
