Rugby (union)
Hi all,
I'm translating a communications text about the French rugby union squad for the upcoming World Cup from French (France) into English (UK). The text contains a mini profile of each squad member.
Please find the context for the word in question below. The profile is about a back:
"Passé par le rugby amateur pour mieux rebondir avec Toulouse, il est un grand relanceur, mais aussi l’un des meilleurs buteurs du rugby français."
There is a profile for another back that contains a similar word to express the same skill:
"Il est certainement le meilleur n°15 français dans les airs. Ses relances du fond du terrain sont un autre atout sur lequel le staff tricolore compte s’appuyer."
My gut feeling is that "relanceur" might be expressing "kicker", based on my research about the two players in question. However, could a more knowledgeable English-speaking rugby fan confirm one way or another please? Many thanks in advance for your help!

counter-attacker
I think they are talking about the backs, especially No 15 the full back, acting as "sweepers" though that term is usually more used in rugby 7s.
It's basically about being able to
field high kicks from the opposition and clear the ball and/or launch a counter attack .
so re-kicking the ball, place-kicking it out of danger, and/or running with it for a counter-attack
"relancer" means = instigate a counter-attack, reignite, relaunch, get momentum going again
https://www.rugbypass.com/articles/fullback-position-guide/
The fullback usually stands towards the back of the field. In order to effectively act as a sweeper , they must stand behind the main line of defence. [...]
When in this position, the fullback’s main responsibilities are to stop onrushing defenders and to catch high kicks. Once they’ve successfully taken a catch, they must use their tactical awareness to decide what to do next. Depending on the game situation and the play in front of them, the fullback may choose to either return the kick or start a counter-attacking move from deep.

Althea Draper
: They are the initiator of the counter attack - typically a fullback or one of the other backs but not always. (Quite often they will run into trouble as no on can keep up with them to back them up - but I suppose I'm biased as I was a forward!)

: Yes, initiator of the counter-attack, as Althea says. To Matt: I'd be temped to reformulate so it sounds a bit more natural, i.e. "excels at launching counter-attacks".

: Wrong type of rugby - the questioner is asking about rugby union, not rugby league.

: Your reference is about rugby league not rugby union. In rugby union, a receiver is anyone catching the ball.

performer/instigator of breakout (attack)s
There has to be a better term, but here's the lowdown on relance.
Here it says a relance can be either a kick or a run:
"La relance de jeu est la forme de jeu (main, pied) utilisée après un regroupement."
https://cdn.website-editor.net/89b7b7984804408ea6df991b682c2...
Here, however, it is specifically ball in hand:
"Trois solutions pour sortir efficacement de son camp […]
LE COUP DE PIED DE PRESSION (seems to be a kick into the corridor along the sideline) […]
L’OUVREUR, (demi d’ouverture, coup de pied) […]
LA RELANCE ( la relance à la main)"
https://www.world.rugby/news/513921
Either way, a relance is a response to a situation where the team is under pressure, deep in its own territory.
"Then unfolded some remarkable defence as the Crusaders repelled wave after wave of attack on their line, forcing errors even from the likes of Mortlock. Another breakout attack saw the Crusaders make it into the Brumbies 22, but unprotected ball at the back of the ruck was turned over and the Crusaders’ chance to score was blown.

Video of a French 'breakout attack' (abbreviated to 'breakout' in the text below the video) here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99clU7Ey6JQ
"Going into the final 10 minutes of the game, Ncedo Koyano managed to get over in the corner following a breakout attack off turnover ball just outside their own 22 to extend Rovers lead to nine points (23-14)"
https://kznrugby.co.za/Castle_Murray_Cup_News.html
"Ireland finish the half well, with McFadden at the heart of a big breakout attack from the kick-off. It looks for a second like Ireland might go all the way, but the attack ends with Adam Ashley-Cooper bridging over a ball for a penalty just inside the Aussie half and the Australians kick for touch."
https://www.rte.ie/sport/post/101292616/
Beware, however: "Breakout: A breakout is a player who is expected to have, or is already having, a standout year."

: Yes, I think this also works fine. Would be tempted to reformulate in Matt's context, though: "proficient at instigating breakout attacks" or something along those lines.

Was what came to mind.
Like a no 10 in football.

That said, in rugby it's usually the numbers 9 and 10 who are the playmakers, and France's are pretty handy – Dupont and Ntamack if memory serves.

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrière_(rugby_à_XV)
