From a description of potential biodiversity survey methods, where forestry plots are surveyed in swathes and transects:

I'm confused about what "capping" a survey actually means in this context. Is it the volume or quantity of the input data that is capped, or the values of the data? Or does the capping apply to the surface area covered by the survey?

"relevé plafonné/ déplafonné" could be "limited / unlimited counting"
the "limited counting" being limited to getting to a "threshold value" after which there is no point to keep counting.

Feel free to believe it or not, but as it happened I came to the idea of "threshold" all on my own (comme un grand!) // There is no S^%t In nor Out - with the reference found by Althea Draper the ST makes perfect sense.

a maximum applies to
"le relevé est plafonné":
"a maximum applies to the count" (or whatever word you're using to translate relevé)
"les données sont plafonnées":
"a maximum applies to the data"
Althea explains the situation well and I agree with Phil, the idea isn't particularly well formed and/or well expressed.
Perhaps something like "threshold amount" or "quota" is what the author should have written: an amount sufficient for the purposes of the study.
My "maximum" is the very obvious rendering of "plafond".

I reckon "maximum" renders the slight fuzziness/fogginess of "plafond" well.

For example, to save time and effort where you are counting very large trees and there are lots of them, stop counting very large trees once you have counted 5 in one hectare. There are other conditions too for things like deadwood, native trees and so on - see page 15 in the reference
