Spanish term

arreglo

Spanish to English Other Food & Drink Food purchasing
SPAIN. There are several entries for "arreglo" in the glossaries and elsewhere, but I can't find a translation to fit the context (e.g. 'arreglo para paella con pollo y conejo') It's something that I would never buy when back in the UK, so I don't know what I'd call it.

It appears in the food list I'm translating in the heading "SURTIDOS, ARREGLOS Y MEZCLAS".

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (3): Toni Castano, patinba, philgoddard

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

philgoddard Dec 13, 2022:
Just one thing I don't know if this is relevant, but fixings is US English.
neilmac (asker) Dec 13, 2022:
FWIW Later on in the same text, the heading MEZCLAS appears, followed by ""para paellas", so I could probably just have translated "ARREGLOS Y MEZCLAS" as MIXES/MIXTURES.
neilmac (asker) Dec 13, 2022:
@phil In the end, I decided not to use "kit", as it might be too specific, as would "ingredients", whereas I think "fixings" is vague enough to get by.
philgoddard Dec 12, 2022:
Yes, the term is often associated with home delivery - but you can also buy them in stores:

neilmac (asker) Dec 12, 2022:
@Matt It appears in the food list I'm translating in the heading "SURTIDOS, ARREGLOS Y MEZCLAS". The bit about paellas was a real-life example of use of the term from my own experience. I might just use "KITS" as per phil's suggestion, although it sounds more like the Hello Fresh home cooking kits my daughter gets delivered in the UK.
matt robinson Dec 12, 2022:
@neilmac What is it in this case? What is the context? I have seen/heard the term used for both/either the meat and/or the seasoning.

A crime against the dish, btw. Almost as bad as adding chorizo!
philgoddard Dec 12, 2022:
You can buy dried mixes (mezclas) for dishes like this, containing (in this case) the rice, vegetables and seasonings and labeled 'just add meat'. These might be displayed alongside the 'arreglo' on the meat counter, so you buy two products to make your paella. The 'arreglo' is the perishable component.
'Meat for meal kits', maybe?
philgoddard Dec 12, 2022:
Here's a picture of the product It's only the meat, not any other ingredients.
http://soysuper.com/p/arreglo-paella-con-pollo-y-conejo-band...
I was thinking 'meal kit', but that implies everything you need. This is a good question!
Ana Vozone Dec 12, 2022:
@Toni The context is: 'arreglo para paella con pollo y conejo' . I do not think it is a combination of spices.
Toni Castano Dec 12, 2022:
My two cents I have very little idea about cooking, but my mother certainly does have, and she explained to me that the "arreglo" for the "paella" is the set of condiments added to the rice and meat, i.e. saffron, tomato, salt, green beans and, at times, also an Ave(...) pill/cube (or any other brand) to enhance the flavour.
Ana Vozone Dec 12, 2022:
@Neil The term "arreglo" in Spanish is described as "produtos cárnicos elaborados....", i.e., they are apparently prepared/processed industrially and not mixed upon request.
neilmac (asker) Dec 12, 2022:
@Matt When you ask for "arreglo para paella" at the meat counter, it usually means the meat/s (usually chicken and/or rabbit), although for example at the herb stall in the local market the other week I asked for "arreglo para ensalada", which would be a seasoning mix.
matt robinson Dec 12, 2022:
Depends what it is If powdered spice mix to add to the "sofrito" then I would go with "seasoning".

"meat fixings" ?
Note from asker:
I was thinking of using "ingredients", but "fixings" is now a strong contender.

Yes, I'd considered something like this. However, I just can't imagine going into the butcher and asking for the "preparations" for a paella, or even a stew, or a pie. In fact, I'd probably ask for the ingredients individually.

meat for meal kits

See the picture and my other comments in the discussion box.

The product consists only of meat, and I believe the other ingredients are likely to be sold separately in dried form as a sachet - that's the 'mezcla' referred to in neilmac's text.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Toni Castano : But why are you so convinced that only meat is there? Neil has written "arreglo para paella con pollo y conejo", so I understand the chicken and rabbit are already part of the paella, and the "arreglo" is something additional.

See the picture I linked to in my discussion entry. And Neil says it usually means the meat.

meat box / selected meats

For making a stew, a paella, a barbecue...

Here is an English equivalent of the Spanish 'arreglo' and the Italian 'carni selezionate'.

https://www.archersbutchers.com/buy-meat-online/meat-boxes/s...

A packet of different meats carefully prepared for the preparation of a specific dish, in this case a packet of chicken and rabbit meat for the preparation of paella. The rice and other necessary ingredients will have to be bought separately. It is possible that the meat is spiced, but not necessarily.

If it had been a packet with ALL the ingredients for paella preparation, I would have used 'kit'.
