German term

Kultiviertheit

sophistication?

Discussion

thefastshow Oct 19, 2022:
@Ramey I was thinking along the lines of these interpretations:
https://www.britannica.com/dictionary/sophisticated
https://m.dict.cc/deen/?s=Kultiviertheit : (manners)
https://de.pons.com/übersetzung/englisch-deutsch/sophisticat...

https://www.collinsdictionary.com/de/worterbuch/englisch/sop... : (style)

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophistication
I consider "Kultiviertheit" to be similar to/a part of "kulturelle Grammatik" and the knowledge and awareness of style and culture constitutes an important instrument of a social construct to set itsself apart from others. A bit like cives romani and barbari. On a lighter note one could talk about "refinement", which maybe used from members of such circles themselves. I guess sophistication may be the more contemporary interpretation of "Kultiviertheit".

sophistication/refinement

Sophistication often applies to a person's entire aura, from clothing to speech habits, reflecting education and worldliness.
I personally prefer refinement as it implies the process of becoming refined.

It's a tricky one, actually. Finesse can imply cunning; sophistication, snobbishness; cultured, pearls; refinement; the oil industry :-)!
agree British Diana : at least Wikipedia seems to equate Kultiviertheit with sophistication

finesse

Example sentence:

Her attitude and behaviour in social situations showed great finesse.

a cultured person

I think that sophistication isnt quite it. We have to use an adj., IMHO. That entrains changing the sentence structure which I leave up to you!

agree TonyTK : Good point, and none of the other suggestions seem to fit. As "Kultiviertheit" can be high or low, how about "cultural background" as defined at https://www.igi-global.com/dictionary/ipad/6367? Or is that too open to misinterpretation?

Refinement

Def refinement in this context, although Sophistication not wrong. Context here speaks to how a person is trained to conform to certain social norms or preferences, Sophistication speaks more to independent thought IMHO.
