Infatti, il termine "water-rot", come il sinonimo "water-ret" viene usato anche per indicare la macerazione delle piante lino o, appunto della canapa mediante immersione in acqua, che rappresenta la prima fase del processo di produzione delle rispettive fibre tessili. Infatti, il verbo "to rot" è sinonimo di "to ret" nel significato di "macerare". L'espressione presente nel termine di domanda indica invece la normale resistenza del tessuto in fibra di canapa all'azione appunto deteriorante dell'acqua.
