Latin term

pro meritis de civitate

Latin to English Social Sciences Medical: Dentistry doctor's degree certificate
Pennsylvania University doctor of dental science degree. The sentence is: Hic gradus conlatus est cum laude pro meritis de civitate. Never seen this before. What does it add to an honours degree?
Thanks,
David

Jennifer White Jul 23, 2022:
well literally, of course, it reads "for merit from the state" (of Pennsylvania") I don't think it has anything to do with pro bono work, I would just express it as something like "duly awarded by the state" . Just a suggestion. Good luck!
Mark Pleas Jul 23, 2022:
Could it be that the medical student did some voluntary, pro bono medical work in the local city?
