Make it stick

English to Spanish Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
The police questioned her about a hit-and-run, but she was underage and her foster mother came forward as an alibi – something the woman later confessed was a lie – and the cops couldn’t make it stick.

What does mean make it stick in this sentence?

I think it might mean that they couldn't arrest her, but I don't know if I understood the meaning of this expression correctly.

validarlo/validar o hacer valer la acusación

The paragraph is not clearly written. It would seem the cops could not make their charges stick because she was underage and had an alibi (later proved to be false).

In that case the best interpretation would be:

make something stick
informal
a) to prove that something is true

Peer comment(s):

agree François Tardif : Sí, o no pudieron “mantener la acusación” o “confirmar sus sospechas”.

agree Jennifer Levey : I'd go with 'hacer valer' in this context.

Peer comment(s):

agree José Patrício : You can charge him with fraud, but you'll need more evidence if you want to make the charge stick when it comes to a trial. - https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/make (something) ...
