German term

Eignungsuntersuchung

German to English Other Military / Defense
The translation I have got is "aptitude test," and I am happy with it.

My question is: what is this exactly, in context. I am curious to understand what the aptitude test involved, who it was given to, and similar details about it.

Context is WWII, German military, training soldiers.

Picture of where it appears in the text. Order for the troop selection

For context, the translation of the paragraph I cited:
"6. After the arrival of the replacements, it is the duty of the company commander to determine their abilities and potential usefulness. For this, professional and paramilitary training as well as the results of the aptitude test will be important sources."

Discussion

Adrian's links were most helpful so far, as they had the term in question, even if the context is a little off with Navy (vs Army).

Ramey, thank you for the link. I looked at it, but it did not have our term.
sparta1978 (asker) May 10, 2022:
To those who are OK translating the term without understanding it, or the context.

I find this approach shocking. It produces inaccurate results.

Researching and understanding the term and context are crucial parts of a quality translation.

Hi, Members of an historical platform might be more familiar with this kind of question and might be able to help you with the details.

a reference found in context of the N. German Army This website aims to analyze the German dog-tags and understand their abbreviations. One such abbreviation had our term in it.

Sounds a bit like it would help to take a look at military history books as well. Especially if you want a detailed explanation and not just a straightforward translation of the term.

understanding the term is important If you are an expert in the field, this absolutely gains importance.

that is what I am looking for. Understanding the term in the context given (WWII Germany, Troop Training)
What exactly was the aptitude test (Eignungsuntersuchung) in WWII Germany for wehrmacht troops. Who was subject to take it (officers and NCOs, all branches of the Wehrmacht or just some? etc)
Adrian MM. May 7, 2022:
borderline laboratory-exam question @ Phil Research shows that this this Eignungsuntersuchung may not have been a straight written aptitude test, as in modern-day professional terms, but rather a lab examination bordering on a military pseudo-medical experiment.
philgoddard May 7, 2022:
This is not a language question.

I'm not a Nazi and never have been. Better ask somebody else.
Like I said, you may wish to address another forum. This is about translations only. Not about intricate knowledge of history in all intricate details.
Note from asker:
I appreciate your research. I am very interested to find references to Eignungsuntersuchung. Nazi Germany was a beurocrats heaven. Everything was documented and explained. We are digging very deep and these questions are not common knowledge. It makes sense it is taking a long time to find answer.
Eignungsuntersuchung is our term. Not their physical standards. That, I believe is something else.

laboratory-based aptitude test, mainly for (naval) officer recruits during World War II

Oddly, proof of 'Aryan' pedigree had not been part of the test.

These days in Austria, the feared military service, Eignungsprüfungs process is called 'Stellung' where adult males, even if applying for 'subsituted social service' but not if hospitalised, are called to a recruitment centre. Adult females can volunteer for service.
