Spanish to English Medical Medical: Health Care Medical education and compulsory social service
The context is a summary of compulsory social service programs tied to medical education in countries of Latin America. This country is Chile. While "doble" means 'double', "por lo menos un año" is not double the time spent in the classroom; it's more like half. Do you think the text can be understood to mean '**compared with** twice the length of time spent in the classroom'?

There are three modalidades de servicio médico obligatorio rural para acceder a la especialización profesional:

1. sistema de becas;

2. programa de “destinación y formación”;

Muriel Vasconcellos (asker) Nov 12, 2021:
Literal versus actual meaning Maybe I wasn't clear. There is no training program that is 1.5 years. These are medical graduates who have completed the full medical curriculum and are now seeking to specialize. If their service, at 3 years, is double their training time, the training period would be 1.5 years. However, in reality their past training was at least 4 years and specialization, at least 2 years, total 6. Three is *half* of 6, not double. That's my confusion. Unless I'm missing something.

for twice the length of time as the (duration of the) training period

that requires having previously worked as a healthcare professional for at least a year, in addition to/besides/as well as period of compulsory social service paid by the State upon completion of the internship, working as a healthcare provider, for twice the length of time as the (duration of the) training period

This is how I understand it, though I might be missing something.

My translation is just to explain my answer to your question. It can definitely be improved, though hopefully it gives you a general idea.

neutral philgoddard : This just seems to be a longer version of Oliver's answer.

Yes, I'm sorry, but while I was preparing my answer, Oliver posted his, which hadn't appeared when I started mine. I left it because I thought it was slightly more complete but I can always delete it. Not sure about six years though.
neutral Stuart and Aida Nelson : "not paid by the state" but to repay the state for the grant postgraduates get :). Otherwise, OK.

According to a reference I've found, the 'beca' is 'financiado por el estado'. Thank you for your opinion :-)

for twice the length of the training

i.e, for 6 years, as they work for 3 years in areas belonging to the lowest poverty quintiles and this then qualifies them to continue the speciality training programme;

for twice the length of the specialty training

As I understand this is not about the entire medical study period but only the specialty training.

The following link explains it in detail how the specialty training works in Chile:

Specialty doctor is the new term for Specialty and Associated Specialty Grade (SASG) doctors. The specialty doctor post is not a training grade; it is a grade where a doctor has at least 4 years of postgraduate training, two of those being in a relevant specialty. As specialty doctors are not in training, their roles are usually much more focused on meeting NHS service requirements, compared to consultant roles. For example, specialty doctors often have considerably less administrative functions compared to consultants

Residency / postgraduation Specialty training

https://thesavvyimg.co.uk/specialty-training-residency-in-th...

Medical education in the United States

Residency

Each of the specialties in medicine has established its own curriculum, which defines the length and content of residency training necessary to practice in that specialty. Programs range from 3 years after medical school for internal medicine and pediatrics, to 5 years for general surgery, to 7 years for neurosurgery. Each specialty training program either incorporates an internship year to satisfy the requirements of state licensure, or stipulates that an internship year be completed before starting the program at the second post-graduate year (PGY-2).

The source text does not specify that it should be specialty training period but I think it is important to add it for clarity and to avoid confusion :)

And of course the previous answers from Oliver and Helena are also valid but I thought I would go into detail for better understanding, I hope :)

And actually, for more clarity it should be

for twice the length of the specialty training period

Note from asker:
Thank you! Your answer is correct. I don't know which answerer came up first with the specific explanation of the situation in Chile. I saw Helena's research in the Discussion before I saw your answer. I hope I didn't do you an injustice, but it looks like her research came first.
P.S. Re: Adrian's comment. Needless to say, this is not a "vocational training course." The recipients are medical graduates going on to specialize in a field of medicine.
Peer comment(s):

agree Adrian MM. : if you mean special vocational training course..

Thank you Adrian, it is about doctors :)
