A self-blind person is someone who "has the conception of the various mental states, and can entertain the thought that it has this or that belief, desire, intention, etc., but which is unable to become aware of the truth of such a thought except in a third-person way" (1996, p. 31). In other words, the self-blind individual (let us follow Shoemaker and call him George) cannot perceive introspectively his own mental states, like the blind cannot perceive visually their environment. What is more, Shoemaker considers that George is in no way different from regular people when it comes to his rationality.

autoconhecimento é como o conhecimento perceptual (ainda que os processos envolvidos não sejam exatamente do mesmo tipo), então é possível que uma pessoa seja cega sobre seus próprios estados mentais.
