Non-PRO Spanish to English Other Poetry & Literature Literature.
I would like to know the best translation of this phrase from Latin American Spanish into American English. Translator colleagues from Spain, feel free to send me your suggestions as well.

Is okay to translate it as"They fullfilled their goals very precisely or very carefully??

This is from the story about The hen that laid the golden eggs of Aesop and Félix María de Samaniego

Here is the full paragraph:

Durante las semanas siguientes, cumplieron estos propósitos al pie de la letra. La llevaban todos los días hasta la hierba verde que crecía ¡unto al estanque del pueblo, y todas las noches la acostaban en una cama de paja, en un rincón caliente de la cocina.

Oct 2, 2021 10:27: Adrian MM. changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (3): Toni Castano, Carol Gullidge, Adrian MM.

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

They did these things as instructed

It would help if we knew what "estos propósitos" were, for example if you had shared the previous paragraph with us. Context is king.

NB: Your own suggestion seems quite unsuitable to me; other colleagues may disagree.

For example, "instructed" in my response will not work unless they were actually following instructions...

Other options could be "they did exactly this/they did exactly as they were told..."

-> Over the following weeks, they did just that.

Vale. Por ello, para seguir "Debemos tratarla muy bien.", opino que "And, in the weeks to follow, they did just that...." funciona mejor, y es el registro adecuado.

NB: The context of the previous sentence now shows that "instructions" is neither appropriate nor necessary. I therefore amend my suggestion to ""And, in the weeks to follow, they did just that...."

Hi neilmac, Thanks for your help. Here are the previous paragraph before that one in the Kudoz Question: Es verdad que tenemos una gallina que pone huevos de oro. Thanks again.
Thanks for your help Neilmac.

the carefully achieved their goals paying attention the smallest details

I don't think it's regarding instructions, so this is my option

It should read paying attention TO the smallest detail. My mistake due to correcting what I wrote, sorry :-0((

"THEY carefully achieved their goals/aims by paying attention to the smallest details" is what I wanted to suggest. Sorry for my mistakes :-0((

Thanks Eileen.

neutral Domini Lucas : Yes, the more I think of it the more I think you're right re not instructions. It's the bit that jarred for me before extra context. Trouble is that with goals/plans etc I find Eng sentences so far a bit laboured, hence neutral though agree in principle

they carried out these instructions down to the very last detail

technically all that's coming up in my dictionaries for propósitos is intentions but, I agree with everyone else that it must mean something like instructions.

I was going to add to the letter as an option, but noticed as I was writing that Carol has already proposed it.

this link does talk about fulfilling intentions which suits propósitos better. and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ re carrying out intentions in which case carried out/fulfilled their intentions to the letter (though Carol pipped me to the post on ... to the letter so those points would be hers).

Perhaps their plans ties together goals and intentions better. Something like they fulfilled every detail of their plans. I do think the detail part needs some emphasis.

agree neilmac : But the context now shows that "instructions/ to the very last detail" are no longer appropriate :-)
