une dernière manche fut jouée par Hitler lui-même

French to English Art/Literary General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters From An Art History Book
Contexte :

Merci Beaucoup,

Barbara

@ Safe Tex - no problem, I'm glad to read that we share the same point of view.
SafeTex Sep 12, 2021:
@ Emmanuella Oops . Looks like I suggested sth that you actually suggested in the discussion well before me. Sorry about that.
Barbara Cochran, MFA (asker) Sep 11, 2021:
Thanks, Margaret. Certainly a couple of options to consider.
Margaret Morrison Sep 11, 2021:
Hand/set You could perhaps use the metaphor of any suitable game depending on the text, I'd think first of card games eg "Playing one last hand" or maybe "dealt his final card"?
Emmanuella Sep 11, 2021:
No attack by a hammer.
Barbara Cochran, MFA (asker) Sep 11, 2021:
Like I mentioned previously, I would not translate as a vulgar expression, anyway, since that wouldn't reflect the overall register.
Emmanuella Sep 11, 2021:
It's not a vulgar expression. 1st set Goering, 2nd set Rosenberg, 3rd set Hitler.
Barbara Cochran, MFA (asker) Sep 11, 2021:
Actually, when I attempted to do a terminology search for the expression, I found nothing conclusive, although it seems like it might be a rather vulgar expression. But given the over-all register of the text, I think that something like what Katarina has suggested would be a lot more appropriate.
Emmanuella Sep 11, 2021:
To have the last say ?

Hitler played the last round

Or “the last round was played by H”
Peer comment(s):

agree Tomasso : one last round, maybe one last inning , overtime? one last round of overtime, overtime round?? Je ne sais

Thank you, Tomasso. For suggestions as well. I would say just "last round", but tastes differ
agree Daryo : or the "last set" if you want a parallel with tennis

Hitler himself made a last-ditch attempt.

This means a final effort after several failures.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : There is nothing in the source text to suggest this element of last-ditch / desperation; in fact, it could eqaully well be 'to put and end to it' — Overtranslation, as this stands.

neutral AllegroTrans : This suggests Hitler was losing/struggling and I don't think that was the case at all

disagree Daryo : "after several failures"? I can't see any "repeated failures" by Hitler - he seems to avoid getting involved until finally simply wading in and settling the dispute.

Daryo and Allegro, I thought the text referred to the failures of Goebbels to get his hands on these works of art. This text has been mostly about Goebbels, as I have inferred from following it.
disagree Emmanuella : Goering and. not Goebbels

Hitler himself dealt a parting shot

Might work?

Hitler himself played the final round/played the end game

Pour la dernière manche, Mme Nearing mène par 21 à 16.
As we enter our final round, Mrs. Nearing leads by a score of 21 to 16.
Tout se joue en cette dernière manche.
It's all to this final round.

La dernière manche est donc d'une importance cruciale, tant pour Israël que pour le Hamas.
The end game - for both Israel and Hamas - is thus crucially important.

Hitler called the final shot/had the final say

Hello all

I've read all the suggestion and although they are closer linguistically to the French then mine, I don't think they sit nicely with what follows:

for e.g. "Hitler played the last round, deciding to..."

In the French, it's not just that Hitler entered the fray, but that his decision was final.

And when you call the final shot/have the final say, this sits well with what that shot/say was (the decision)

In the suggestions, the one for me closest to this is about Hitler trumping them all

But I've decided to put up my own suggestion instead
Example sentence:

Hitler called the final shot/had the final say, deciding to

a final stroke had been played by Hitler himself

mabye chance back to the passive, the tendse to the pluperfect and the emphasis to a negative connotation of 'pulling a flanker' (BrE slang), though the asker already seems to have made up her mind on the 'right' answer.

the final hand was "dealt"/"played" by Hitler himself

I see the officers of these ranks almost playing games with lives, which could be used in this card-playing idiom.

DEAL A/THE HAND
1. Literally, ......
2. By extension, to accord someone their fortune or fate in life at random.
Look, life's going to deal you a hand, good or bad, and it's up to you do make of it what you will.
"Sometimes I get down about the accident, but then I remember that if I hadn't been dealt this hand, I would never have met the love of my life in intensive care."

"The German leadership would probably be thrown off balance by Hitler's many impressive victories, plus 7 or more years of Nazi propaganda, plus their own inherent arrogance, and judge they need to play the HAND THAT HITLER DEALT."

Phrase:
The actual phrase here comes here from the idiom "To play the hand you are dealt", which being quite commonly understood/used in English, can easily be re-structured or played with, as I tried to do.
https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/play the hand you are d...
Example sentence:

"Working for the Japanese was a matter of pragmatism for the police, but patriotism and decency PLAYED THE FINAL HAND. "

Peer comment(s):

agree Mpoma : "Played". Plus I would have said "a final hand" (can't see any particular reason to change to a def. article). Jouer une manche comes straight from the card game bridge and works just as well in English.

the last move was made by Hitler himself

Like the last move in a chess game - checkmate.

Checkmate (often shortened to mate) is a game position in chess and other chess-like games in which a player's king is in check (threatened with capture) and there is no possible escape. Checkmating the opponent wins the game.
