French term

par des cris à effrayer tous les échos

French to English Art/Literary General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters From An Art History Book
Contexte :

Merci Beaucoup,

Barbara

Agree with Safetex That 'cries' would fit better
SafeTex Sep 3, 2021:
@all I like the thing with "waking the dead" (Marge) but I don't like "shouting" which for me is just raising your voice and a bit "plain". I don't see why "cries", or even "hollering" or "bellowing" were not suggested.
Emmanuella Sep 3, 2021:
Thanks. 'Effrayer tous les échos ' est une image vraiment 'tirée par les cheveux. Je pensais que cela serait également possible en anglais.
AllegroTrans Sep 3, 2021:
I don't think that any phrase using "echoes" would really work here and "the echoes are not returning out of fear" doesn't make sense to me, even as a starting point
Emmanuella Sep 3, 2021:
Serait-il possible de construire une phrase indiquant en ang!ais que' the echoes are not returning out of fear? C'est le sens.
Barbara Cochran, MFA (asker) Sep 2, 2021:
That's an interesting possibility. Thanks, Verginia.
Verginia Ophof Sep 2, 2021:
(shouts) Loud enough to raise the dead.

by shouts sufficient to wake the dead

This English idiom seems to me to be a good substitute for the French idiom.

agree Angelo Berbotto : i think it fits nicely

agree José Patrício : wake the dead Also found in: Wikipedia. wake the dead To be extremely noisy and disruptive. - https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/wake the dead

agree MoiraB : Like Verginia, I'd tweak it and use a verb: by shouting loud enough to wake the dead

neutral philgoddard : I think this sounds odd. It's not so much about the loudness as the spine-chilling rage, hence 'effrayer'.

piercing

I think non-literal is best. I can't get effrayer or echo into the translation,
Note from asker:
I don't think "piercing" would work too well in this instance, since "piercing screams" are more like what one hears coming from someone who is being tortured and about to be killed. But thanks, anyway.

with menacing/raging/intimidatory shouts

I think we need something in line with the fact that this is a human
"Waking the dead" sounds a tad too extreme imo

It may sound better to use a verb construction here e.g. ....and went into a raging tirade of shouting

echoing cries of anger // cries that burned with an echoing rage

"gave vent to cries of an echoing anger"

"vented his anger with echoing cries of anger/rage"

"vented his anger with cries burning of an echoing rage"

Or something like that....just ideas but can be played around with.

Reunion

"Goering meanwhile increased the pressure on the Vichy government, which ordered the Musées to take the Basel altar [Antependium] to Paris.
It came accompanied by three curators and Minister Bonnard himself, who astonished everyone by saying that the altar could only go to Germany as a personal gift from Marshal Pétain to Reichsmarschall Goering, just what the latter wished to avoid.

From the anteroom the waiting curators could hear Goering's screams of rage and accusations, quite true, of obstruction by the French museum administration."

"Mais ajoute-t-il, le maréchal Pétain accepterait d'en faire don au Grand Maréchal du Reich, à titre personnel...
Un silence, Stupéfaction générale. Puis Goering se déchaîne. Trop, c'est trop. [...] Goering pousse des cris épouvantables, attrape Bonnard, casse une chaise, double de volume dans sa fureur."
