Reruns

English to French Science Meteorology Reruns
Bonjour, j'ai un doute sur le sens du terme "rerun" ici : "The delegation was interested in the coupling with hydrology and asked if the Centre had been able to make some reruns of flood events in the last couple of years. The Director of Forecasts confirmed that the Centre did make reruns."

Note from asker:
Merci.

English term (edited): to make reruns

d'accomplir de nouvelles simulations d'inondations

Meteorologists build models of the weather. The reruns are about simulating floods that did not happen. The point is to explore events that did not happen but could have happened.

English term (edited): reruns of flood events

What you forgot to mention is that this MUST BE about about some simulation / forecasting software.

"reruns of flood events" = run the "model" (= predictions about how some events will unfold from a given initial state of the system) taking as "initial point of the simulation" the situation just before some past real flooding, and compare the predictions according to this model / simulation with how past real flood events did evolve for real.

If the "predictive model" is any good, starting from some some real life "initial state of the system" it SHOULD predict how the system did evolve for real / the "predictions from the model" should correspond to what really happened.

asked if the Centre had been able to make some reruns of flood events in the last couple of years
=

it's a "re-run" because it's an attempt to "run again" some past flood event using this model / simulation software.

The first "run" is the real past event, the "repeated run" is the software simulation of that past event.

OK
so it would then be

IOW you keep tweaking various parameters and see if the "model's predictions" are getting better.

in this specific sentence

"... make some reruns of flood events in the last couple of years"

is DEFINITELY about

"comparing real flood events that happened in the last couple of years - how this flood events unfolded - with what should have happened ed according to the model / the simulation"

It is quite possible that if one set of parameters "predicted" a course of event that didn't correspond to what had really happened, the simulation was rerun with different parameters again and again, until the "simulated version of events" started resembling was really happened.

IOW whether it was done once or repeatedly, the key point is STILL in

Note from asker:
Thanks for your answer. The client finally got back to me with this answer: It certainly involves rerun a model (this is what we use to make a forecast). But the idea is to run a different version of the model where something has changed, and compare the forecast produced by this different version of the model with the actual observations and see if this new version is better than the original one.
