English term

"to corticate"

English to French Medical Medical (general) expandable interbody implant
contexte

"An incision is made in the body of a patient and a cutting instrument creates a surgical pathway for implantation of intervertebral implant 314 within the patient body. A guide instrument is employed to initially distract the first vertebra from the second vertebra. A sleeve or cannula is used to access the intervertebral disc space and facilitate delivery and access for components of the interbody implant system. A preparation instrument can be inserted within the sleeve or cannula and disposed within the intervertebral disc space. The preparation instrument(s) can be employed to remove some or all of the disc tissue including the disc nucleus and fluids, adjacent tissues and/or bone, corticate, scrape and/or remove tissue from the surfaces of endplates of the first and second vertebrae, as well as for aspiration and irrigation of the region according to the requirements of a particular surgical application."

Thank you!

ghadir madani (asker) Aug 26, 2021:
"corticate" Bonjour,
liz askew Aug 4, 2021:
Also, we must translate "corticate, scrape and/or remove", we cannot edit the text.
liz askew Aug 4, 2021:
In that case kindly remove your unwarranted "disagree" :)
François Tardif Aug 3, 2021:
@ Liz You are probably right Liz. As I said, my answer was only based on my instinct, since "corticate" does not appear in any terminology reference. I also forgot to consider the possibility that it could be a silly typo, as it seems to be! What is certain is that we, translators, cannot indulge in guesswork at all. At this point, we absolutely must consult the author and ask him to clarify his intention.

Since “remove some or all of the disc tissue” comprehend the different forms of removal stated further, I would translate from the rephrased sentence below without the superfluous part “corticate, scrape and/or remove [which would solve the problem of translating “decorticate”]:

“The preparation instrument(s) can be employed to remove some or all of the disc tissue including the disc nucleus and fluids, adjacent tissues and/or bone tissue from the surfaces of endplates of the first and second vertebrae, as well as for aspiration and irrigation of the region according to the requirements of a particular surgical application."
Drmanu49 Aug 3, 2021:
@Liz yes and this is why I suggested "removal of".

No, "corticate" is a verb here.
François Tardif Aug 2, 2021:
corticate est employé comme nom ici Bonjour Ghadir, il me semble que, selon mon instinct linguistique, l’auteur a oublié de mettre un « and to » devant le verbe « to scrape », de sorte que la phrase aurait dû se lire comme suit :
« The preparation instrument(s) can be employed to remove some or all of the disc tissue including the disc nucleus and fluids, adjacent tissues and/or bone, corticate, AND TO scrape and/or remove tissue from… »

À noter que « corticate » n’est pas un verbe, mais bien un adjectif (voulant dire en médecine « qui a un cortex, une couche périphérique ») employé comme substantif, à l’instar de beaucoup d’autres adjectifs anglais qui sont souvent substantivés. Il s’ajoute ainsi aux autres noms de l’énumération, c.-à-d., « disc tissue, disc nucleus and fluids, adjacent tissues and/or bone, corticate ».

Peer comment(s):

disagree François Tardif : If “decorticate” is the right word intended by the author, then the French translation, IMO, should probably be “décortiquer” or “écorcher”, not “extraire” “exciser” or “enlever” which would translate into “remove” in English. See more in Discuss. Greetin

I think you are wrong. Only two instances of "corticate" and how does it make sense in the context???
