German term

mit eingerechnet

German to English Social Sciences History
Concerning the construction of a parochial school in Nebraska (USA) in 1897, the church records include the following information:

"Die Bestimmung der vorigen Gemeindeversammlung wurde so weit umgeändert daß kein Vorbau an dem Schulhause gebaut werden soll und anstat 34, 36 Fuß lang gebaut werden soll, so daß das Gebäude 376 Fuß lang, 24 breit und 12 Fuß hoch sein soll. Eine Patischen von 6 Fuß solle gemacht werden, die Wände mit eingerechnet."

Once again, an English word has been introduced (Patischen = partition). I understand that a 6-foot partition is to be made "including the walls." ? However, that makes no sense to me. Is there another meaning of "mit eingerechnet" that I'm unaware of?

Ramey Rieger (X) May 8, 2021:
Hey there Timoshka Yes, I would think they ere built of wood, considering they had so much of it back then. Still, they may had double walls or some sort of insulation so the kids didn't freeze their bums off in the winter. Anyway, happy to help.
Timoshka (asker) May 8, 2021:
@ Ramey Rieger Thanks for your insight! Makes sense to me. By the way, the building (according to previous church records) had a brick foundation, but was otherwise made of wood.
Ramey Rieger (X) May 8, 2021:
Hi Timoshka! Here's a possile interpretation: The writer is differentiating between the partition and bearing walls: https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2001-01-26-010126...
IF the building is made of brick (or even if it's not?) and the partition is perpendicular to the wall, then the wall thickness must be calculated into the 6 feet.

I think the confusion comes from the difficulties involved with measuring space. The definition of a square foot seems to be the issue. Believe it or not, there's no legal definition of a square foot, so the author chose to include the walls, making the usable floor space less than indicated. In other words, the partition was made to be six feet minus the width of the walls.

agree philgoddard : I don't think we can be sure of the meaning, but I also don't see how else you could translate this.
