Both terms are used in underground mining. Do you mean that "cross-cut" is used for both "отрезной орт" и "отрезной штрек" ? But in Russian, the meaning of these terms differs. Штрек is a horizontal working driven along the ore body or deads, and орт is a shorter working driven across the strike of the ore body and not exceeding its limits. As for the translation of отрезной штрек, Russian-English mining dictionaries give "shrink drift". But, there is no term for отрезной орт.
