fieffés faquins à la lecture de vos commentaires, m'est revenu à l'esprit cette expression, qui englobe le caractère désuet du personnage, mais aussi contient toutes les connotations de mépris, malhonnêteté, etc.
Comme ils sont décrits je les imagine un peu comme le renard et son compère dans le Pinocchio.

@ Emmanuella, pas naïves, elle les menace avec un pique-feu tout droit sorti de sa forge. Elle est cru à ce moment là, bien que testicules ne relèvent pas du langage familier, un personne vulgaire aurait utilisé guts ou bollocks.
D'autres personnage sont grossiers, mais pas elle, pour l'instant

Deux petits chiots orphelins ? Ca n'est pas trop mon registre, mais selon le contexte, pourquoi ne pas simplement traduire par "deux petits chiots orphelins" ? Si c'est un conte pour enfants, il vaut mieux éviter en effet toute connotation péjorative ou vulgaire.

Des idées par adaptation/équivalence/collocation, ce n'est pas ce qui manque en français.

Si c'est le cas, ça écarterait toute référence à l'absence de mère dans la traduction, du moins au sens propre. Those two motherless dogs... > « Ces deux bâtards... » ?

Ce qui me gêne c'est que le narrateur à ce moment est une jeune femme posée, bien éduquée, travailleuse, construisant des boîtes à musiques en forgeant elle même les pièces dans la boutique léguée par sa mère récemment décédée.
Elle a l'air un peu désuète, dans sa façon de s'exprimer, du moins à ce stade.
