That's the long and according to the Oxford Duden official way of translating this term. All other ways would be adjectives like "unmodisch" "schrecklich" or "grausam" in connection with for instance, "wie siehst Du denn aus!". I think the Volgescheuche is still the shortest and most accurate.

An amlost synonym in English would be "dowdy", wgich translates as "unansehnlich" or "schäbig"

a more formal way of saying it would be ungepflegt but it depends on the context and on the person

You could describe it in many ways:

- ohne jeden Schick
- altmodisch
- verstaubt
