German term

tangiert ... einen Ablagerungsstandort

German to English Tech/Engineering Architecture
"Die Projektparzelle tangiert gemäss Kataster der belasteten Standorte (KbS) des Kantons Zürich einen Ablagerungsstandort."

Talking about a construction site in Zurich. Does "tangiert" mean "borders on" here, or how would you translate it?

TIA.

Discussion

Johannes Gleim Aug 24, 2020:
Continued Note: A landfill is not dangerous per se, but could become so if it is not carefully monitored. The "Ablagerungsstandort" dates back to unknown time acc. my researches (no date found in any source), e.g.:

Dabei, sowie bei verschiedenen weiteren Ablagerungsstandorten zwischen Windlach und Glattfelden (Wiederauffüllungen der Kiesgruben) handelt es sich um belastete Standorte ohne Untersuchungs- oder Überwachungs-/Sanierungsbedarf (de-finitive Klassierung nach Art. 5 Abs. a AltlV).
https://www.nagra.ch/display.cfm/id/102401/disp_type/display...

That's why I hesitate to call it "landfill". It's rather a dump.
Johannes Gleim Aug 24, 2020:
What is a "landfill"? A landfill site, also known as a tip, dump, rubbish dump, garbage dump, or dumping ground, is a site for the disposal of waste materials. Landfill is the oldest and most common form of waste disposal, although the systematic burial of the waste with daily, intermediate and final covers only began in 1940s.
:
The term landfill is usually shorthand for a municipal landfill or sanitary landfill. These facilities were first introduced early in the 20th century, but gained wide use in the 1960s and 1970s, in an effort to eliminate open dumps and other "unsanitary" waste disposal practices.
:
Landfills have the potential to cause a number of issues. Infrastructure disruption, such as damage to access roads by heavy vehicles, may occur. Pollution of local roads and water courses from wheels on vehicles when they leave the landfill can be significant and can be mitigated by wheel washing systems. Pollution of the local environment, such as contamination of groundwater or aquifers or soil contamination may occur, as well.

Johannes Gleim Aug 21, 2020:
@ Schtroumpf & Kim As fas as I see you are supporting two answers with "landfill", but different translations for "tangiert". Would be nice to select your preferences.

BTW: Did you read the definitions for "Altablagerung" und "Ablagerungsstandort" and it's translations?
Note: Not all landfills complies to this definition. Hence, over-interpretation.

BTW: We have to translate not only "Ablagerungsstandort", but also "tangieren". For the latter term I think that "encroaching" or "straddle" do not coney the sense of "tangieren"while "adjoins" or "contiguous with" would work, and "touches", notably.

"borders on" captures the meaning well.
"is contiguous with" is an elegant alternative.

neutral Johannes Gleim : "landfill site" is overinterpretated as the asked term relates only to dangerous sites. See Wikipedia. Nothing against "contiguous" // "iron ore" is irrelevant. And corrections are allowed, or not?

Your original suggestion was 'deposition', which was totally wide of the mark. Your replacement - 'deposit' - is equally wrong. Try googling 'iron ore deposits'; you will find that these are natural resources waiting to be extracted/mined.

straddles a waste disposal site

We need to take the verb register down a notch. "Tangieren" has a level of abstraction that doesn't work very well in English.

According to the Canton of Zurich Cadaster of Contaminated Sites (KbS), the project parcel straddles a waste disposal site.

The term "deposition" is not really wrong but ambiguously. See below:

deposition noun (LAYER) [ U ]geologyspecialized
the formation of a layer of a substance such as soil or rock, or the substance that forms the layer
the process by which solid materials, such as earth and rock, are added to gradually by the action of wind or water, or the structure resulting from this process

That’s why I do repost my answer with standard expression.
